15 Massachusetts Hospitals Launch Bedside Addiction Treatment Teams

In all honesty, if it was not for them taking such a sincere interest in my well-being and really caring, then I might not be alive today. That is Dan story after receiving addiction treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A Life-Altering Experience

When Dan arrived at MGH with a fever of 105 and fentanyl in his system, he expected judgment. Instead, within hours an addiction treatment specialist visited his room and asked what he needed to feel better. He was prescribed methadone and connected to outpatient counseling.

Statewide Expansion

In July 2024, fifteen hospitals and hospital systems across Massachusetts launched or expanded teams of addiction specialists. This represents the most significant expansion of hospital-based addiction treatment in decades, supported by $16 million from opioid settlement funds.

Results That Matter

Studies show embedding addiction specialists in hospitals reduces substance use severity, increases treatment participation, and dramatically cuts readmissions - saving lives and taxpayer dollars.

A Transformational Approach

Dan now works full time and has space in his life for his wife - changes he never thought possible when he was still using heroin. Recovery started at the hospital bedside.
