The circumstances often don’t change — same job, same apartment, same Tuesday. What changes is the window you’re looking through. Early on this sounds like consolation-prize talk; later it reveals itself as the bigger gift, because circumstances were never the problem. We drank at weddings and funerals alike. An outlook that doesn’t depend on the scenery is the only kind weatherproof enough to live in.
